Class 1: Labor and Birth Foundations

In this class, we focus on helping you understand how your body works in labor and what the birth process can look like, while also creating space for flexibility and informed decision making.

Topics include:

  • Understanding your care team, including the roles of doulas and midwives
  • How your body prepares for and moves through labor, including hormones and anatomy
  • The stages of labor, with a closer look at transition
  • The importance of rest and pacing yourself in early labor
  • When to reach out to your provider, including water breaking, bleeding, or meconium
  • Comfort and coping options, including both medicated and unmedicated approaches
  • Common hospital interventions and how to navigate them with confidence
  • Pushing, birth of your baby, and delivery of the placenta
  • The golden hour and early bonding time
  • Postpartum considerations, including awareness of hemorrhage
  • Immediate newborn care and safety
  • Understanding fetal heart tones and APGAR scoring

Labor Support and Comfort Techniques

We also take time to prepare both you and your support person with hands-on tools to move through labor together with confidence and connection. Topics include: The role of a support person and how they can show up in meaningful ways Breathing techniques to support relaxation and coping Labor positions and simple exercises to encourage progress Partner support techniques, including counter pressure The importance of movement in labor Nourishment and hydration during labor Perineal massage and preparation

Topics include:

  • What to expect during the fourth trimester
  • Physical recovery, including bleeding, cramping, and your first postpartum bathroom experience
  • Healing from tearing and general recovery
  • The first 40 days, including nutrition, rest, and hormonal changes
  • Emotional wellbeing, including baby blues and postpartum mood support
  • Newborn care basics such as cord care, diaper output, jaundice, and bathing
  • Understanding newborn sleep and ways to soothe your baby
  • Breastfeeding foundations and early expectations
  • Car seat basics and safe transport
